The Marin Alcatraz is a true dirt jump and slopestyle beast that was co-designed by the UK legend that is Matt Jones. The 6061 aluminium framed DJ bike is designed to take a kicking and come back looking for more. If you want to send tailwhips and backflips all day, then this is the bike for you.
The Alcatraz helps to highlight Marin's recent return to form, the Alcatraz is the dirt jump bike you want and need in your life. It comes with pretty sensible geometry for charging huge slopestyle courses, but will also be fun for an afternoon playing at your local pump track.
Matt Jones is famous for trying to keep his bike as light as possible, and that may well be part of the reason for why Marin’s previous steel DJ bike has turned into a lightweight aluminium beast. The frame looks positively industrial, and the big aluminium welds help to reinforce the idea that this bike can take a lot of punishment.
With a 69° headtube you have a bike that will perform on a dime but not have you feeling like you’re going to go over the bars with every awkward landing. The wheelbase on the bike is also short, coming in at 1053.68mm. As the frame has horizontal dropouts, you can leave the back wheel slammed if you want to make the bike easy to spin, or lengthen it if you just want to boost in a straight line, it’s always nice to have choices.
The X-Fusion Slant 26 DJ fork will help you land those airs and save your wrists from getting too blown out. With 34mm stanchions they will also help to cut down on flex when things get a bit squirrely. They are air sprung, so they are easy to set up to get the feel you want whether that is a stiff fork that almost feels locked out or a slightly more free fork that sucks up every single landing.
To prove that 26 ain't dead yet, Marin has created a custom extrusion for their rim that goes on the wheels for the Alcatraz. The rear wheel also only comes with a 14t rear cog, because that is all you need for when you’re out shredding the gnar. Well, you might prefer a different cog size, but all you need is one gear for dirt jumping, and it is a few parts less for you to break when you have that inevitable slam. If you don’t slam, you aren’t trying hard enough.
On the wheels, you’ll find a set of Vee Tire’s XCV tyres. These tyres have very little rolling resistance and will keep you sailing through a set of rhythms with no issues. These use Vee Tire’s Low Specific Gravity compound, this is a lightweight compound that Vee Tire designed for BMX bikes, so you know it’ll be right at home on this trail slayer.
The Alcatraz comes with a set of Tektro HDM275 hydraulic disc brakes, with a 180mm rotor at the front and a 160mm rotor at the rear. We can also be pretty sure you might just be ditching the front one as soon as you hit a set of trails or a pump track. Just don’t ride along the road if you do.
The Marin Alcatraz will set all budding dirt jumpers on the right path. You’ll find the bike easy to get to grips with riding and it’ll also push your riding to new limits. All you need to do now is head down your local spot and get ready to send it.
